Following the great success from November last year, we are organizing another Ecovation Open Days event in Oxfordshire. This time it will run as part of the Heritage Open Day event 2008 ( www.heritageopendays.org ), which
celebrates England's fantastic architecture and culture by offering
free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or
normally charge for admission. We think that in times of Climate Change
eco-renovated and eco-built houses ought to play a major role in this event.
By being part of it we hope to bring across the importance of eco-renovation
and give people a first hand experience of what goes into eco-renovating a
house. We want to demonstrate that so much is in fact possible for the
existing housing stock with your own pioneering work serving as an inspiring example and model which others can use for their own eco-renovation work. Architectural treasures as well as ordinary council
homes are worth more the celebration, if they are based on
sustainability. We hope to reach people from many different backgrounds
and experiences and welcome especially first time visitors.
In these 4 days you will be able to visit eco-houses in Oxford
and Oxfordshire, which will be opening their door to members of the public.
The event aims to
empower and inspire members of the public to make environmental changes to
their own homes through seeing what practical steps other people have taken
in their homes. It is about people learning from the experience of others
and making positive changes to reduce their environmental footprint.
With the Ecovation Open Day event we are:
• Offering people
the opportunity to see what Low- and Zero-Carbon
technologies could be
applied to homes in Oxfordshire, and gain practical
advice from house
owners
• Increasing the network of Eco-renovators in Oxfordshire
• Increasing the profile of home eco-renovations, to demonstrate what is
possible for individual home owners, to stimulate demand in Oxfordshire
The houses will demonstrate:
• environmental renovation
• insulation methods
• renewable energy
• reduced energy bills
• water savings
• waste water recycling
• rainwater harvesting
• green roofs
• natural and recycled materials
This
event is free of charge (donations welcome) and suitable for anybody who wants to find out more about eco-renovation....
The
online eco-home list of all the fantastic houses exhibiting, including
the details about dates and times, will be available here by the beginning of August...

ECOVATION is looking for VOLUNTEERS... Can you help?
For the Ecovation Open Day event from Thurs 11th - Sunday 14th
September 2008, we are still looking for friendly and responsible
volunteers.
COULD YOU BE JUST WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR?
This event is concentrating largely on the eco-renovation of already
existing houses, and reducing their carbon emissions is a crucial chunk
of work to enable us to reach aim towards the set target.
The main purpose of our volunteers is to:
• Welcome guests at the door
• Point out case study write-ups and displayed eco-renovation materials to
visitors
• Sell Haynes Eco-renovation books/Yellow house CDs etc.
• Collect/look after donations
• Hand out feedback forms and do a head count of visitors
• Make sure that visitors behave appropriately and don’t wonder around by
themselves
• Support house owners on their guided tours or help with any other related
business
If you are interested, please contact toni(at)coinet.org.uk
(tel. 01865 403334)
You will need to let her know which dates and for how many hours you
would be available for, and which part of Oxford or Oxfordshire you
would be prepared to travel to...
We look forward to hearing from you!
Extracts from the Executive Summary of Home Truths
- a low carbon strategy to reduce UK House emissions by 80% by 2050, by
Brenda Boardman, University of Oxford's Environmental Change Institute:
‘The scientific consensus
is that for the UK to play its part in helping the world avoid a rise
of more than 2°C, we must reduce our carbon emissions by 80 per
cent by 2050. The household sector represents 27 per cent of our total
emissions and achieving deep cuts here is an imperative.'
‘Of
the homes we will inhabit in 2050, around 80 per cent are already
standing today and these have to be the main focus for carbon-reduction
policies.'
